Born in the year 500, St David was the grandson of Ceredig ap Cunedda, King of Ceredigion and son of St Non. He became a great preacher and inspirational leader of many religious communities. St David was the only native-born saint in Britain and Ireland. St David died on 1 March in 589 and buried in St David’s Cathedral in Pembrokeshire. His last words to his followers came from a sermon he gave shortly before he died were;
St David , Patron Saint of WalesBe joyful, keep the faith, and do the little things you have heard and seen me do"
The phrase 'Gwnewch y pethau bychain mewn bywyd' 'Do the little things in life' is a fundamental principle and is still used today.
This year, we will continue to focus on delivering events that are good for our people, our businesses and our environment – and it is our privilege to take you on that journey too. We are a destination that creates a lasting impression, immersing you in our culture, sharing our ethos and creating a true sense of belonging – or, as we say in Wales, "hiraeth".
So, wherever you are in the world this St David’s Day, we invite you to join us in celebrating our national day by sharing his legacy and a “Random Act of Welshness” with us and with colleagues across the world.
This could be anything you’re doing to represent Wales within the industry, acts of kindness or charity you’re involved in, or even education and promotion that add value to both our country and the wider world.
We’ll be sure to share what you’re up to, and we hope you’ll support our own endorsements as we celebrate the great work taking place every day across the business events industry in Wales.
Here are just a few ideas for you to get started:
- Wish someone a Happy St David's Day or as we say in Wales 'Dydd Gwyl Dewi hapus' – and here is a handy pronunciation - Deethe-goo-eel Dew-ee happ-iss.
- Give a cwtch – a cwtch in Wales is like a hug, but so much bigger and better.
- Fly the red dragon / draig goch – you can’t miss the red dragon on our national flag and we are proud of it, if you have something with the Welsh dragon on we’d love to see it.
- Bake our Welsh cakes or bara brith – they’re fun to make and really delicious. Try the traditional recipe;
This year, we are also encouraging the business events community to engage with our new Draig Goch AR app (mobile only), developed in partnership with Sugar Creative. The app allows users to place a virtual, fire‑breathing dragon into their surroundings and capture video content of it roaming iconic locations.
Wherever you are in the world, we invite you to capture the dragon in a recognisable setting and share your content on social media, tagging @walesdotcom to be part of the global St David’s Day celebrations.
