Profile

After originally doing a PhD in radio astronomy, Professor Eales has spent much of his career using telescopes that observe in the submillimetre waveband, the last of the electromagnetic wavebands to be opened up for astronomy.
Alongside his scientific pursuits, Professor Eales is also a writer, sharing not only the remarkable discoveries made about the universe but also the human stories behind how those discoveries came to be.
Professor Stephen Eales, Cardiff UniversityAstronomy is one of the most international research fields and our work links Wales to the rest of the UK and to the World. In 2023 we hosted the UK National Astronomy Meeting and welcomed 500 astronomers to Cardiff. From this we plan to stage a series of events that will bring astronomy out into our communities."
