Professor Antonio J. Gill

With over 20 years of research experience, Professor Antonio j. Gill's work has led to fundamental advances in large strain solid mechanics, in-silico modelling of soft robotics, computational Multiphysics, meshless methods, and finite element/volume methods. Antonio has been recognised with the 2011 Philip Leverhulme Prize, the 2016 ECCOMAS Zienkiewicz Prize, election as Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (2024) and the FOCAL Association (Spain, 2024) and was selected to represent the UK in ECCOMAS Solids and Structures and IUTAM.

An internationally recognised expert in Computational Mechanics and Multiphysics, Antonio has published over 100 journal papers, 3 books, and more than 200 conference proceedings, and supervised over 20 PhDs to completion, many now in leading academic and industrial roles. He serves on the editorial boards of AMM, FEAD, ECM and CPM, and has secured over £4M as PI and £500K as co-I from EPSRC, EU, AWE, DSTL, Siemens and ESI Group.

His international profile includes over 30 Keynote, Plenary and invited lectures (e.g. Duke, Oxford, Tsinghua, Siegen, KTU, Ecole Centrale de Nantes, Cambridge, Glasgow) and acting as external examiner in 20+ PhDs. Antonio takes pride in mentoring award-winning doctoral research within the Zienkiewicz Institute, the UK Association of Computational Mechanics and ECCOMAS, contributing to the next generation of leaders in the field.

Becoming part of Ambassadors Wales is an honour and a platform to strengthen the international visibility of our research and innovation. As Research Professor in Computational Mechanics at Swansea University, one of the birthplaces of the Finite Element Method, I take pride in advancing a tradition of excellence that has shaped engineering worldwide, since the pioneering work of Prof. O. Zienkiewicz. As a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, I see this role as an opportunity to attract major conferences, foster international collaborations, and showcase Wales as a hub of pioneering ideas, thereby reinforcing both our academic reputation and global engagement."
